DARIEN, CT — Darien Board of Finance member Robert Cardone was appointed to the Hindley Holmes and Royle Building Committee this week, filling the vacancy left by David Martin who died unexpectedly on July 30.
Board of Finance Chair James Palen said during Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting that he spoke with Cardone about his ability to fill the vacancy, and with HHR Building Committee co-chairs Jill McCammon and Christopher Price.
The town recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the HHR project, which will bring needed upgrades and enhancements to the town’s three elementary schools.

“It’s a big capital project,” Palen said. “It’s actually the largest one ever I think this town has undertaken. I would nominate Rob to fill that vacancy.”
Martin served as the Board of Finance’s representative on the committee. During the HHR groundbreaking ceremony, Price spoke about Martin’s importance to the project.

“Dave was an absolutely critical member of this project. He spearheaded the appropriations process, which for anybody who was paying attention during that, it took some time. There were some challenges to it, and Dave was front and center during the whole thing. He also spearheaded negotiations with our design team and with the construction management team on the contracts with those groups,” Price said.
“Unfortunately, we have no choice but to continue forward without Dave. We are filling his shoes, and they’re very, very big shoes to fill, but his absence will be felt.”
