“Initial investigation indicates that a group was involved in an outdoor altercation and a knife was presented,” according to a statement from police.
Evanston Police Cmdr. Scott Sophier told Patch one adult and all five of the minors were charged with mob action.
One of the children was also petitioned delinquent in juvenile court for battery, another for criminal trespass and another trespassing, resisting arrest and two counts of battery to a police officer.
And, one, in addition to mob action, was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon for possession of a knife on school grounds.
“It first started around 8 a.m. and both schools were in their respective lockdowns for approximately one hour,” District 65 Communications Manager Hannah Dillow told Patch.
Some, or all, of the people under 18 who were arrested Thursday morning were not students at Haven, Dillow said, and there are no active safety concerns at either school.
“We are grateful for the quick response of our district safety and response team and officers from the Evanston Police Department,” she said. “Our Haven and Kingsley teams were wonderful in helping to keep our students calm and feeling cared for.”
