DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Park District (DGPD) recently finalized its comprehensive master plan, according to the park district’s website. The plan had been in development since November 2023 and aims to help outline development priorities for the next decade.
The master plan delineated five priorities, which are:
Priorities were outlined after workshops with park district staff and board members, along with partners and community members. These feedback sessions prioritized park maintenance, sustainability and preservation.

Some short-term partnership plans outlined in the comprehensive master plan include finding partners to celebrate “unique spaces” and increasing opportunities for grants and donations.
In the long-term, DGPD looks to “continue to identify and strategize opportunities to generate additional sources of revenue beyond taxes.” Long-term partnership goals also include prioritizing partnerships that will improve access to pools and other water amenities.

A large part of the aim to modernize DGPD parks and facilities includes a focus on parking and access for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to Gelwicks Park, Lincoln Center was also specifically prioritized in the master plan for both short- and long-term improvements.
DGPD officials also plan to weigh the idea of developing a dog park, which has been a priority for dog owners, according to the master plan. Additional dog-related events and programs are also being considered.
To improve programming options, DGPD is looking into offering more single-day programs for adults, with a focus on inclusivity and outdoor recreation. Customer service training was also listed as a priority, to help improve experiences for staff and community members.
