WILLINGTON, CT — A Vernon man has been charged in a violent coffee-throwing incident at a truck stop in Willington that took place three days before Christmas and involved remarks over culture, state police said.

According to an arrest warrant, at 4:37 a.m. on Dec. 22, state police were notified that one FedEx employee had thrown hot coffee at another FedEx employee at the Dunkin’ Donuts located at the TA truck stop in Willington.

When troopers arrived at the Dunkin’ Donuts, they encountered a 43-year-old FedEx employee whose clothes were covered in coffee, according to a warrant. She also had discoloration and burn marks on her neck and face, according to a warrant. She refused medical attention and told state police that a fellow FedEx employee had thrown the coffee, but she didn’t know his name according to a warrant.

The woman told troopers she was in line behind four men who were having difficulty ordering because of a language barrier, according to a warrant. The woman told troopers that a customer in front of the men began “calling them names” and she then confronted him about it, according to a warrant. She said the man then grabbed his coffee cup and hurled it at her, according to a warrant.

The four men, who recently came to the United States from Pakistan, were also hit with flying coffee, according to a warrant.

The coffee thrower fled the Dunkin’ with the woman and four men in tow, but was able to get away according to a warrant. The woman reported the incident to her managers at FedEx, and they identified the man when troopers went to FedEx, according to a warrant. He refused to cooperate with state police, according to a warrant.

Video surveillance showed the man actually throwing two hot lattes, according to a warrant.

The 24-year-old was eventually charged with criminal mischief and breach of peace, both in the second degree, along with third-degree assault. His initial $25,000 bond was downgraded to a promise to appear at an arraignment and the man is due back in court on Feb. 21, records show.
