MEDFORD, MA — The Police Department issued specific instructions Thursday for community members who accidentally call 911, citing repeated instances of the occurrence recently.

The department instructs people who accidentally call the emergency line not to immediately hang up. Instead, it urged residents to verify information with the dispatcher and then tell them that emergency services are not required. If a caller hangs up and receives a return call, the department encourages them to answer. If a call is placed to 911 and the caller hangs up without verifying information, a response will be dispatched to ensure an emergency is not taking place.
The department explained how they feel Apple products are susceptible to accidental emergency calls being placed.

“A number of accidental calls we get are due to the ‘Emergency SOS’ feature found on iPhones and Apple watches. If you click the buttons on the side in rapid succession, the phone or watch will dial 911,” Medford PD said in a statement. “This will sometimes happen if you’re trying to shut the devices off or adjusting the volume. Check your settings to see if you have this feature enabled and be cognizant when using your devices.”
