CONNECTICUT — There’s less than a week left before Thanksgiving Day and the more-or-less official start to the 2024 holiday season. But one glance at Connecticut’s events calendar would make you think we were already waist-deep in garland and tinsel.
There’s no place where that will be more true than at the 46th Annual Holly Berry Festival. Hosted by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the festival is a family-friendly, juried craft fair featuring over 45 local artisans. Get all your Christmas shopping — at least for the more discerning entries on your Yule List — out of the way in one fell, holly-laden swoop at the Sacred Heart Academy. Show hours are Friday, Nov. 22, 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Look for just a slightly different ambiance, and considerably more wine, inside the train depot in Downtown New Milford, beginning Friday. Gallery 25 & Creative Arts Studio will be presenting their Holiday Arts & Fine Craft Show through Jan. 12, 2025. The opening reception will be Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sip and stroll through a huge array of unique gifts, paintings, pottery, glass art, woodworking and handcrafted items. You’ll find the historic station on the west side of New Milford’s downtown business district, with Railroad Street to its east and the tracks of the Housatonic Railroad to the west.

It’s a good thing that Santa Claus is magical, because he will be in demand in just about every Connecticut town every weekend from now until Christmas. One place you will find him — and the missus — this weekend is leading the Jewett City Snowflake Parade. Griswold Parks & Rec is rolling out the red carpet for those jolly old elves, and the festivities begin at 2 p.m., Saturday in Veteran’s Memorial Park. Expect floats, marching bands, twirling dancers and plenty of sequins.

If you grew up watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, you’ve got a built-in soft-and-fuzzy spot for Sunday’s Parade Spectacular in Downtown Stamford. Award-winning marching bands, dance groups, 15 giant helium balloons, and daredevil Bello Nock all pitch in to make Stamford’s Thanksgiving parade one of the largest in the country. It begins at noon, at the intersection of Hoyt Street and Summer Street.
The Warner Theatre in Torrington will play host to a different kind of spectacle for just one performance only on Sunday when The World Ballet Company performs Swan Lake. You may have seen it once or twice, but WBC says its “detailed, hand-painted sets and over 150 radiant costumes …bring fresh representation to this timeless classic,” and it’s tough to argue the point. Sunday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online here.
Our guess is there will be considerably less Tchaikovsky and appreciably more Beatles and Stones at the Danbury Record & CD Expo on Saturday (but you never know). The bi-annual show is a gathering of dealers from throughout New England. Dig around the one-day extravaganza of records, CDs, LPs, 45s, DVDs, and rock-and-roll memorabilia to find a bargain, or that one-of-a-kind collector’s item. Nov. 23, 10 to 4 p.m., at VFW Post #149 on Byron Street.
