AVON, CT — A well-known and highly regarded restaurant in Avon has abruptly closed, with locals wondering what had happened at River’s Edge Mediterranean Cuisine in town.

Located at 201 W. Main St., Avon, the River’s Edge specializes in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine and pastries.

“River’s Edge menu features authentic halal meats, plenty of delicious vegetarian and vegan options, and sinfully indulgent desserts,” reads the restaurants website, which was still up on Monday.

Sadly, the eatery’s owners confirmed to Patch on Monday afternoon that it has closed for good, citing the post-pandemic inflation issues that have ravaged the restaurant industry in recent years.

“As you know it’s been a really tough time for many businesses specially small ones,” wrote owners Khaled and Nashwa Ayad to Patch Monday.

“Everything has been going up in price by day also the rent and labor were two other big factors behind that tough decision to close it down.

“The market has been down and business slow for a long time without any serious or promising sign of recovery in the near future,” continued the Ayad’s.

While Avon losing a popular and critically acclaimed restaurant reprsents a dose of economic bad news, the good news is folks can still purchase and eat the Ayad’s culinary offerings.

The couple also owns a store in West Hartford called “Kitchen Plate,” at 1240 Farmington Ave.

It is not a full-service restaurant, but the Ayeds’ “Kitchen Plate” still offers many of the offerings at River’s Edge in a more casual eatery/retail establishment.
