NORTH BABYLON, NY — A North Babylon man is on a long road to recovery: His foot needed to be amputated after a young woman he tried to help crashed her car, trapping him between her vehicle and his own in August.

Edward Marone, 54, was sitting in his parked car on the corner of Lloyd Avenue and Skidmore Road on August 27 around 6 p.m. when he saw a young woman, 18, of North Bellmore, crash a 2023 Mercedes Benz C30 into a utility pole, he said. The snapped and fell in front of a home on Skidmore Road. She was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious physical injury, police said.

When Marone got out of the car to see if the young woman needed help, she reversed the Mercedes, pinning his foot between the vehicles, he said.

Marone’s foot was later amputated at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.

Now, the community is coming together to help Marone recover and eventually adapt to a new way of life with a GoFundMe created by his friend, Paul Windom, of Lindenhurst.

On the fundraiser page, Marone wrote: “My foot was crushed between the two cars. If I didn’t try to jump over the car, it would’ve been much worse; I may have been killed. They had to amputate my foot from my upper calf down.”

So far, the GoFundMe has raised around $34,000 of a $50,000 goal.

Marone continued: “In the midst of all the chaos, the amount of support and love I’ve received has been so overwhelming. I cannot thank you all enough for the prayers and the love and support I have been receiving through all of this. It keeps not only my spirits but my head up high and hopeful for a fast recovery.”

He added: “The staff, nurses, doctors and surgeons of Good Samaritan Hospital has been the best and most kind, careful and thoughtful group of people. I cannot thank them enough for their patience and helping keeping my spirits up, ensuring I get the best treatment to make sure I am happy. Another thank you as well to the amazing up standers at the scene of the crash who not only ensured my safety but kept my mind in a good place during the whole ordeal.

“I am still in the hospital on the road to recovery now and surrounded by all your love and prayers, Oce again, your continuous love and support throughout this is going to be my biggest support throughout this journey.”
