RESTON, VA — Wiehle Avenue will be closed from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, to allow for the installation of the pedestrian bridge at the W&OD Trail, according to Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured via Sunset Hills Road, Reston Parkway and Baron Cameron Avenue. A minor pedestrian detour may also take place.

Financed by federal and state grants, the bridge is part of the Reston Metrorail Access Group program and replaces that at-grade crossing of the W&OD Trail over Wiehle Avenue. Fairfax County broke ground on the project on May 9, 2023.

“This bridge will be is a major safety improvement for everyone moving through that area whether they are walking, biking, or driving,” Hunter Mill Supervisor Walter Alcorn told Patch via email. “I want to thank former Senator [Janet] Howell for helping fund the new bridge, and thank all the local taxpayers who helped make this critical improvement a reality.”

The addition of a bridge over Wiehle Avenue is expected to eliminate conflicts between trail users and vehicles, as well as reduce the number of rear-end collisions at the intersection, according to Fairfax County.

Along with the installation of the bridge, Wiehle Avenue will be widened in both directions from Sunset Hills Road to the Reston Fire Station and Pupatella Pizza entrances. This will allow for the addition of two 5-foot-wide bike lanes in keeping with Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Transportation plan.
