MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The Asbury Park Press was the first to report that the Family Dollar on Rt. 36 in Middletown is indeed closing.

The store, located at 6 Hwy. 36 east, currently has “store closing” signs up in the windows.

On March 13, their parent company announced about 1,000 Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores nationwide will be closing. It appears the Middletown location was on the chopping block.

Family Dollar has around 8,000 stores in the United States, and Dollar Tree operates more than 15,00 stores around the country. They are owned by the same parent company, Dollar Tree.

Rick Dreiling, chairman and CEO of Dollar Tree, said in the March 13 call that “persistent inflation and reduced government benefits continue to pressure the lower-income consumers,” who make up a large share of Family Dollar’s customer base.

Family Dollar, Dollar Tree Plan To Close Roughly 1,000 Stores (March 13)

In related news, a Dollar General tried to open at 62 and 74 Leonardville Road in Belford earlier this March, but they pulled their application after significant community resistance. The Dollar General had to be approved for more than 10 variances to open at that location.

They withdrew their application from the Middletown Planning Board March 6.

However, Patch is hearing they may reapply later this spring, at the same location, where the empty Wells Fargo bank building is located at 62 and 74 Leonardville Road in North Middletown.
