VALLEY STREAM, NY — A mother and son were charged with assault after one struck an officer and bit a medic on Sunday in Valley Stream, Nassau police said.

Officers responded to a Valley Stream home to conduct a welfare check at about 1:30 p.m., and upon arrival, determined Brigitte Atta-Poku, 43, required medical treatment and evaluation, but she became violent and combative, striking an officer multiple times and bit a police medic, according to police.

During the struggle, her son, Manai A. Frank, 23, jumped toward the medic and pushed
him, injuring him and an officer, police said.

The medic and the officer were taken to a local area hospital for treatment, and Atta-Poku and Frank were both placed under arrest, according to police.

Brigitte Atta-Poku is charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest. Manai A. Frank has been charged with second-degree assault.

The duo has been scheduled for arraignment on Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
