HAZLET, NJ — On Wednesday, a 17-year-old Middletown teen was arrested by Hazlet Police after they executed a search warrant at his home.

Hazlet Police say the results of that search unearthed a loaded handgun they believe was used to commit an armed robbery in Hazlet on March 18.

This was announced Thursday afternoon by Hazlet Police on their Facebook page.

On March 18, a teen male suspect entered a Chinese restaurant in town and confronted four juveniles, who were patrons, said Hazlet Police.

The male suspect assaulted one of the juveniles and stole his cell phone, then attempted to steal the cell phone of another. During the incident, the accused dropped a handgun on the floor. After picking up the gun, he left the scene in a car driven by his 16-year-old girlfriend, said police.

Hazlet Police say they have identified both teens, the boy and the girl.

The young man from Middletown was charged with first-degree armed robbery, weapons offenses, resisting arrest, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and a disorderly persons offense of simple assault.

The Middletown teen boy is currently in the Middlesex County Youth Detention Center pending a future hearing.
