Speaking to the media after scoring a late penalty winner to see off Strasbourg, Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé notably discussed his recovery from the World Cup final, only ten days ago.

The forward had returned to PSG training just three days after the historic performance, in which he scored a hat-trick and led Les Bleus agonisingly close to retaining their 2018 title.

Facing the press in the mixed zone after his laboured but match-winning performance against the Alsatians, the Frenchman explained that he would have a hard time getting over the result, but that he wouldn’t let it affect his club performances:

“I’ll never digest it. But like I told my coach and teammates, there’s no reason that my club should pay for a defeat with my national team, it’s two different situations.”

“[On returning to training three days early] The message was simple – it was to show that, whatever goes on with the national team, PSG is a separate thing and I’m still determined to bring all the trophies to the capital.”

The league leaders remain unbeaten, with Mbappé clear at the top of the scoring charts in Ligue 1 with his 13th goal – 20 in all competitions. Next up, though, is a trip to high-flying second-place side Lens on New Year’s Day – potentially an early clash for a prospective title race.
