The uproar caused by Noël Le Graët’s comments on Zinedine Zidane shows no sign of stopping just yet. The 81-year-old president of the French Football Federation sparked outrage Sunday evening during an interview with RMC. Le Graët stated he didn’t “give a toss” about the former midfielder’s future career plans following the extension of Didier Deschamps’ contract at the head of Les Bleus until 2026. “I don’t really care, claimed the FFF president. Did he try to ring me ? Definitely not. I wouldn’t have even picked up the phone for him.”

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe (24) and former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin came to the defense of the legendary playmaker-turned-successful manager with Real Madrid. The legendary football club and Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra both called for an apology regarding those comments. Noël Le Graët obliged, and may call Zidane to apologise, but political pressure keeps mounting over the 81-year-old Breton, whose term at the head of French football lasts until 2024.

The French Amateur Football Association (AFFA) has called for Le Graët’s resignation. “The AFFA regrets the disrespectful and irresponsible statements made by the FFF president. His recurring behaviour scorns the sport’s values. This is why the AFFA calls for his resignation and wishes for a new, more transparent and more democratic governance.“
